Genius Hour 1.7
This week I switched back to just doing lessons on Duolingo, in an attempt to please the Duolingo Owl. I worked more on some of the common phrases as well as worked on lessons for speaking in a restaurant. I learned that the Spanish word for bread "pan" is very similar to the French word for bread "pain" which made is easier to remember that particular word. I have found that other than that the only word that came naturally for me to remember was the word for apples, which is manzanas, though I have no idea why that word stuck and some of the others took a bit more work.
At the end of the week I decided to buy an extra lesson with the apps currency that I earned from completing lessons. The additional lesson that I started was flirting, but it ended up being a lot of really cheesy pick up lines. While they were funny to look at and try to translate I do not think that I will ever be using any of them. I did however learn how to ask for someone's name: "cómo te llamas" which I think will actually be useful if I am ever in a situation where Spanish is necessary.
I have found that while I do still rely on my notes for the majority of the spelling of Spanish words, I am starting to remember more of them. I think that the notes were something that I should have started earlier in the genius hour, but I will defiantly continue to take notes and words and phrases that I think will be important to memorize.

I can totally relate to feeling threatened by the Duolingo Owl. He is constantly pressuring me to spend more time on my lessons! I forgot we can use the currency to buy different lessons! I'll try that next week. I think it's awesome that you're taking notes! I definitely didn't think about that my entire genius hour. Are you finding that having French under your belt helps you with learning Spanish? Or are they too different?
ReplyDeleteFor a brief period of time, I tried to learn French. I have taken Spanish 1 and 2 so I picked up on French a little better since they are pretty similar. Has it been easier to learn on Duolingo or in an actual class?
