Genius Hour 2.2

This week for my genius hour I continued to practice the heart that I learned last week. I have memorized how to make this project and am pretty proud of myself. I was going to learn some new techniques and fold different things, but unfortunately I forgot all of my origami paper at home. I have since set a reminder on my phone so that I do not do this because making my own paper was not my favorite experience. 
I am too much of a perfectionist to not only fold the paper but also to cut the initial shape. Origami paper should be a perfect square, if it’s not the folds will not do what they are intended to do. I had trouble getting the square to be a perfect one and that itself stressed me out. Everything that I folded was not symmetrical because of both starting with an uneven edge and not folding some parts as evenly as I should have. 
All in all, I would say that this week was a week of learning experiences. I never want to forget my paper again because of the added stress. I also do not want to get off of my action plan again because I’m disappointed in myself for not learning anything new this week. Next week I might end up trying to master two more patterns to make up for this week.

    I think it's great that you learned so much this week. You overcame your issue by deciding to set reminders in your phone. I think making a small mistake and learning from it this early on is important for you to make the rest of your project more successful. What shapes do you plan to learn next week?

    Setting reminders in your phone definitely is a good thing to do to avoid forgetting vital components of your project at home. Do you have an end goal origami design that you would like to complete before the end of this Genius Hour?

    I think it is really impressive that you were able to adapt, especially when paper is one of the most important parts of origami (I think). I am excited for you to learn more patterns because that means you will keep giving me them, right?

This week didn’t go exactly as planned. I tried to make some flowers but they didn’t turn out so great. The instructions that I was using were a sequence of pictures and I couldn’t quite follow the last couple of steps. Quest was less than impressed with my first attempt at folding something for the day.  After that failure, I decided to find a more detailed video on how to fold something. I decided to try and another paper crane, just to test how I could follow the video. I really liked the video that I stumbled upon because the person filming it highlighted over all the folds that he made. This aspect made the video much easier for me to follow and I’m actually happy with the end result. All in all I am going to count this week as a success. I folded a simple tulip that wasn’t too difficult and I worked through some of my problems with folding. I found a tutorial that really helped me and I now know what types of videos to look for in the future.

Genius hour 2.3

This week I got back on track with my action plan! I was disappointed with myself for falling off-track last week so for this week I tried to fold two different designs. I have gotten into the habit of folding hearts before I start to get into the right headspace, after memorizing those steps I am able to just zone out while folding that project. This was one of my hopes for this project and am very glad that I am becoming able to start just automatically completing the folds. The first new design that I folded this week was a dragon. I had talked to one of my friends about doing this project and he requested that I make a dragon for him. I ended up finding a video on YouTube to follow. While watching the video I was pausing and replaying parts very frequently. Genius Hour 1.8

I have come to the conclusion that I definitely preferred learning a language in an actual class like I did with French. I found that it was a little harder to find the resources that I wanted and wasn’t completely sure what would be considered “most important” as I took notes. One thing that actually did end up helping me while adding to my notes was the “tips” section on the lessons on Duolingo. Some of those sections had helpful charts and explanations that were similar to having a teacher for the language. This past week I focused again on going over my notes and trying to memorize more of the words and phrases that I had written down during previous weeks. While I am definitely not at a place where I am fluent, but some of the basic phrases that I practiced this week are easier to remember than they were last week.
